Traditionally, Ramadan commences with the sighting of the new moon. Once the moon has been sighted people jubilate and announce to others while children go about singing,dancing and beating drums. During this period one is expected to absent him/herself from eating drinking and sexual pleasure from dusk till sunset.
The Niyya “the intent of fasting which is an important element which unfortunately is sometimes forgotten or ignored. This should serve as a reminder for brothers and sisters out there. Also, an important aspect of fasting is the early morning meal called the Suhur and ends after the sun sets .
Another important aspect of Ramadan is sharing with family, friends, neighbours and most importantly the needy.
