Fishery in Nigeria

Fishery is one of the most unique areas of Agriculture and suitable means to enhance and promote economy development of a country. Fish has becomes the main source of animal protein of the diet for many Nigerians. Fish is a cold blooded animal that live in water that allow their body temperature to change as ambient temperature. Fisheries in Nigeria can be carried out through extensive system in flood plains. The extensive usually involves the utilization of flood pond by the local inhabitant to improved fish production through artificial fertilization.


This system is usually practice in the  part of the country where there is river. Extensive system of flood plain can be identify along river Niger and Benue flood plain areas  that  are suitable  for fish production. Fish farming in Nigeria is also practice through an intensive system by constructing pond. This system is usually adopted in most northern part of Nigeria.  The kind of fish that is suitable to rear in Nigeria environment is tilapia fish, cat fish and Titus. The national president, fishery society of Nigeria Foluke Ariola, says investment and money making potential in fishery in Nigeria is currently untapped.        
The problem face in fishing farming in Nigeria is high cost of establishment. The cost of construction of a fish pond is high. Most Nigeria has an interest in fisheries due to lack of resource make them to deviate to others means. Another challenge of fishery is very sensitive to manage. Fish farming involve the use of mental capital that has to do with careful planning of the fish farm.
Problem of fisheries in Nigeria is lack of effective law and regulation to monitor fish farming in river area. The laws are poorly carried out sense there is no proper follow up. The difficulties of fish firming in Nigeria are lack of a trained man power to improve and increase the production of fish.
Fishery in Nigeria can be enhancing through organizing workshop to people who are in fish farming.Fishery can be promoted in Nigeria through the government by assisting those in the sector financially so that they can be able to expand their fish farming in order to increase the production.
Secondly fish farming in Nigeria can be encourage through the government by making laws and policy that will enhance fisheries in the country. Fish farming in Nigeria has play a significant impact in the economic development of the country through the employment opportunity provided for many Nigerians.
