​EDUCATION IN 50 YEARS: A FUTURIST’S PERSPECTIVE

Education, according to Merriam-Webster online dictionary is “the action or process of teaching someone, or the knowledge, skill, and understanding that you get from attending a school, college or university”

 Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary (7th Ed.), defines education as “a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges, to improve knowledge and develop skills”.

If Education is a system of learning, then, it is determined by the learning environment (physical and psychological), teaching aid and the teacher-student relationship at any level. Therefore I expect a total transformation in all these areas, in 50 years to come. 

Both formal and informal education requires the master craft man, who teaches the learners and guides them as well, to make sure that they are doing the right things. He is seen as guidance to put those learning under him through a defined means.

In 2015, educational system involves teachers searching for knowledge and giving it out to the ever ready students. The students of this generation rely on the already-made knowledge from their teachers and only few of these students actually carry out little researches, subjecting its findings to the approval of their teachers. Most of the students of this great era turn their teachers to news casters and listen to them as in a media house. 

50yrs from now will be 2065, and both teacher and student will have lots to do.  There will be a final YES to Paulo Friere’s ‘Critical Pedagogy’ – where teacher-student relationship is no more active-passive participants, but active-active participants. At this time, there will be a NO to the banking concept of education, which is the traditional system of education as practiced today.  

I view the learning environment as physical and psychological. In 50yrs, the spaces involved in teaching will be totally based on individualism. Everyone will be occupied in his own space and not encroaching on others’. The state of mind of students and teachers also matter, there will be no oppression from the side of the lecturers. Such oppression which causes tension, and does not aid learning. Here, both parties will run on the same level, as students will have the opportunity of carrying out researches on the topics to be treated beforehand, therefore they are already exposed to the subject of any class before it commences.

  Partnership will be the watch-word. Teachers and students will work together to make sure that the work progresses. I view the future of education giving room to teachers pairing up with learners so as to form an intimacy right from the first year of admission. This will require more teachers to be employed than we have them now.

Education in 2065 will be a workshop. Things will be tried out and both teacher and student will not be scared of making mistakes as they are prone to discoveries. Students will be integrated into educational rigour as they will be involved from survey, through research to compilation and interpretation of data to get the findings and give out recommendation. This process which is always reserved till the later part of education will start from inception, and what will come up later will be a form of specialization. So, all in all, at the year of graduation, a student would have researched virtually all areas involved in a course of study.

The form of education in 50yrs to come will be participatory. This will be more interactive as students will be given the opportunity to act as teachers, so as to make the whole process engaging. I see the students taking up the role of teachers and leading the class on a journey to understanding concepts and breaking barriers. Mode of deliverance will be presentational based on previous research on the matter of discourse. There will be platform for comparing findings from research works. In this case, teaching will not be redundant, as students coming out to act as teachers each time take or apply different approaches, which makes it all dynamic.

Decision making will not be rigid as it is presently. In 50yrs, decision making shall be done by teachers alongside their students. Meaning that, the effort put into the learning process generally has to be collectively done by those involved. Teachers and students shall be collaborators.

By 2065, students will be exposed to technology early in life. Kids will be opportune to have access to gadgets early in life, which will be a foundation which has a link upward in the chain of education. In 2010, I was flabbergasted when my 3yrs old nephew showed me around his father’s laptop to play a movie from a folder he saw the father save it in earlier.  

Observing the fast rate with which technology grows. By 2065, kindles, iPods, and laptops will be common to every child and would be as necessary as the attires they put on. These will aid the teaching of the future and make everything easier than the present.

All I see is a paperless world. Gadgets will have its take on everyone. Books will be electronics; libraries will be online and lots more. I see a future where education will be based on facts. Technology will keep everyone on same page as technological advancements will pave way to greater achievements. 
The teacher will become a facilitator. He will understand that the students have different mindsets and therefore, try to connect their ideologies together, moderating the process into room where challenges are welcomed and tackled. 

In the future, the teachers will not be wearing the armour of a teacher alone, but that of a student as well, because in this world that I picture, I can see the teacher getting to learn new things in class as well. Therefore, no teacher will come to class as the Almighty-know-it-all.

Teachers will understand the psychology of the students as they will be operating in the same world. Therefore, there will be a connection which will make the students see their teachers as one of them and thus aid understanding. 

Students of the future as I see them will be active participants. They will be greatly involved in discourse in the learning environment as the teachers will give enough room for knowledge to flow from one end to the other.

Students will be vast. Knowing something about everything and knowing everything about something.  Departmental boundaries will be broken, as I see a connection between Drama and Medicine, Law and Accounting, Mass Communication and Pharmacy.

With a futurist’s perspective, I will like to give a precise definition of education as “the process of receiving information in a technological web, through rigorous interaction between teacher and learner, leading to an explicit exposition on particular knowledge at a defined place   ”.
